Federal Reserve Lowers Borrowing Costs for Second Instance This Year During Economic Uncertainty

The US central bank lowered interest rates on Wednesday, representing the second rate cut this year during economic turbulence stemming from the government closure and tariff policies.

Decision Arrives at Unprecedented Moment for Central Bank

The move to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a 0.25% to a range of 3.75% to 4% comes at an extraordinary moment for the Fed. The institution has been under significant strain to lower borrowing costs despite ongoing price increases.

Central Bank Announcement Notes Job Market Shifts

In a statement, the Fed stated that the jobless rate had gone up but stays modest. “Employment growth have slowed,” the release notes. “Inflation has moved up and remains somewhat elevated.”

Federal Closure Complicates Fed’s Job

The ongoing government stoppage, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Gathering of key economic data has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the BLS are on leave during the closure.

Data Gap Affects Monetary Moves

The Federal Reserve usually studies BLS data to determine labor market conditions, such as the number of new jobs created to the economy and the current jobless percentage. The last jobs report was published in the beginning of last month, prior to the shutdown, and gave a relatively bleak snapshot of the jobs market in August.

The figure of jobs created to the economy in August was lower by more than 100,000 since the spring, and unemployment rose to four point three percent – the highest since three years ago.

Alternative Reports Indicate Continued Decline

Though the bureau was scheduled to release September’s job market report in the start of last month, it suspended its release when the shutdown began. Employment data company ADP indicated recently that the business segment cut 32,000 jobs in September, a sign that the job market is still decelerating.

“Both the supply and demand for labor has fallen quite sharply,” central bank head Jerome Powell said earlier this month, which he had previously attributed comes from trade and immigration measures.

Price Data Reveals Gradual Rise

Though the bureau’s employment data has been paused, the agency still released its inflation report for September that showed that prices are going up, although slowly. Costs rose 3% over the last year, the highest since January. In April, the yearly price increase was 2.3%, the minimum it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is two percent.
