An underground market for unapproved slimming drugs is being driven by social media fitness personalities and vendors on messaging platforms, based on new investigations.
Investigational Drug Gaining Popularity Online
Retatrutide, which is still in clinical trials, is being advertised by online personalities for its alleged fat-burning properties. Followers are urged to contact these profiles directly for supplier links, while also obtaining promotional offers.
Thriving Commerce on Social Networks
Additionally, a robust trade exists on Telegram, where groups with numerous of participants share comparison photos, administration instructions and claims of next-day British shipping. Vendors market the drug there before redirecting buyers to WhatsApp for transactions.
Learning About The Experimental Drug
Retatrutide is an investigational injection developed by American pharmaceutical company Eli Lilly. The drug affects three intestinal hormones – GLP-1, GIP and glucagon. Preliminary studies indicate it could help individuals reduce up to a quarter of their body weight. Referred to as the “triple G”, the drug is being hailed digitally as the next Ozempic.
Healthcare Experts Voice Concerns
However, doctors and chemists have warned that the sale of what remains an unapproved medication in the UK is a cause for concern and could lead to individuals injecting substances of unknown origin.
Some professionals stated the popularity for the experimental drug could be connected to the increasing price of licensed weight loss products such as Mounjaro.
Regulatory Position and Implementation
Selling retatrutide on TikTok or Telegram is prohibited in the UK, as it is an unlicensed drug that cannot be promoted or distributed for personal consumption under the Human Medicines Regulations 2012.
Several influencers attempt to sidestep the regulations by calling to the drug as a “research chemical” or citing it as “not for human consumption”. The substance is not a restricted substance, but promotion and distribution can still breach pharmaceutical, marketing, and customer regulations, risking fines, legal action or imprisonment.
Service Reaction and Content Elimination
Based on TikTok, the platform has taken down problematic content and banned associated keywords and search suggestions. The company said it was dedicated to maintaining the platform secure and investing in enhancing compliance measures.
Digital Marketplace Activities
Research also discovered communities with up to nine thousand members marketing the experimental drug using Telegram's integrated search feature, which operates like a public directory. Typing “retatrutide” immediately displays channels with thousands of members, filled with photos of slimming results, positive testimonials and detailed guides for mixing or administering at residence.
Within minutes of joining one community, a vendor shared WhatsApp details, where most transactions occur. The seller provided an instruction manual and guaranteed delivery within 48 hours. When questioned whether the substance was genuine, one seller said: “You can’t be sure.” Another provided a image of a supposed laboratory certificate. Not one inquired about weight, medical conditions or previous experience.
Item Information and Pricing
Inside these groups, posts display black plastic parcels with postal service labels, claiming to include new batches. One communication stated: “It took eight of us to load them this morning.”
Customers can choose between dry substance containers, prepared at home with purified liquid, or ready-to-use injectors usually priced at £160 for 20mg. When questioned how much time a pen should be used, vendors give conflicting answers varying between a few weeks to “depends on your body”.
Service Oversight and Security Measures
A spokesperson for the messaging service stated it regularly moderated dangerous material on its service including material that encouraged the “misuse of controlled medications”. The company noted that it removed “millions of pieces of harmful content each day”.
Medical Professional Warnings
“Individuals are administering substances they cannot confirm. Although the science behind retatrutide is valid, these digital products may not contain what they advertise,” said Jason Murphy, the director of pharmacy at Chemist4U.
Dr Crystal Wyllie of an online medical service connected the increase in interest to current cost increases for authorized weight-loss medications such as Mounjaro. “With costs rising, patients are using social media. But counterfeit treatments are extremely dangerous. You cannot know what’s inside or whether the conditions they were produced in was clean,” she explained.
Her team has previously encountered individuals injured by self-injection from unconfirmed suppliers. “We understand the frustration, but purchasing from Telegram or WhatsApp is taking chances with your health,” said Wyllie. “These substances could be contaminated or incorrectly dosed.”
Manufacturer Position
A representative from the pharmaceutical company said retatrutide was in third stage clinical trials and had not been reviewed or approved by any regulatory agency anywhere in the world. “Consequently at this point no one can market [it] for human use,” they explained, adding that any product “falsely representing itself as a Lilly investigational product not yet authorized … may expose users to possibly serious medical dangers”.
