The UK and US have forged a important bilateral deal that will ensure no tariffs on UK drug products entering the US market.

Key Provisions of the Deal

Under the terms of the agreement, the UK has committed to raise funding on pharmaceuticals through the public health system. This commitment guarantees that duties on these key products will remain at nothing for a duration of the next three years.

This agreement is in response to earlier threats to significantly raise tariffs on branded pharmaceutical products, with figures floated as high as 100%.

"This deal between the United Kingdom strengthens the worldwide climate for cutting-edge drugs and introduces long-overdue fairness to transatlantic drug exports," an announcement declared.

Commercial Impact

Medicines represent one of the Britain's biggest goods shipped to the US, which is clearly the largest market for leading UK drugmakers.

Trade data reveal that in the one-year period to the end of September, the UK shipped pharmaceutical products totaling £11.1bn to the US. This value made up nearly one-fifth of total UK exports in that timeframe.

"This agreement safeguards work, increases funding and paves the way for the UK to emerge as a international leader for life sciences," a government official commented.

Detailed UK Commitments

The deal involves several notable pledges from the UK:

  • Revised Affordability Limit: The UK will lift the cost ceiling at which it judges new therapies to be too expensive by a quarter.
  • Increased NHS Spending: There is a goal to raise overall public funding on drugs from 0.3 percent of GDP to 0.6% over the next decade.
  • Rebate Cap: The sum pharmaceutical firms must refund to the NHS to stay within budget will be capped at 15%. In the past, refunds were more than twenty percent.

Broader Context

The pact comes amid a long-running dispute between the sector and the British authorities over drug pricing and approval rates.

These tensions were heightened by assertions that US consumers were charged significantly more for the equivalent treatments than patients in the Britain and the EU.

Over the last 18 months, several significant drug company projects in the UK have been delayed or abandoned, while major funding commitments have been announced toward US facilities.

One official stated that the NHS had to spend more on medicines, noting that its budget allocation on drugs had shrunk as a percentage of its resources over the last ten years.
